Long Technical College Introduces Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology

New Wing to Provide Additional Services

Phoenix, AZ – January 28, 2005 – Long Technical College, a Kaplan Higher Education institution with two locations in Phoenix, has introduced an associate’s degree program in Veterinary Technology, making it one of the few schools in the state to offer this training.  Additionally, the campus has expanded its facility by 10,500 square feet, adding a new library, classrooms and a veterinary technology lab.

The new program offering and expanded campus facilities were officially celebrated at today’s open house which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony with special guest, The Honorable James P. Weiers, Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives.  Tours of the campus will be given throughout the two-day open house, which runs from Friday, January 28 (11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) to Saturday, January 29 (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.).

“With the addition of our associate’s degree and modern laboratory facilities, we now offer students one of the strongest veterinary technology programs in Arizona,” said Mike Savely, executive director of Long Technical College.  “We look forward to welcoming the community to our facility and serving local employment needs in the veterinary field.”

Veterinary medicine needs well-trained personnel who are as capable as nurses and other technicians in human medicine. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nationwide employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012. To address the increasing demand for veterinary professionals, Long Technical College’s associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology will allow students to obtain hands-on training in a real-life, clinical setting. Well-trained veterinary technicians can function in a number of areas throughout veterinary practices, including laboratory and intensive care.

Long Technical College’s Associate of Occupational Studies in Veterinary Technology emphasizes hands-on training in animal health, nursing and husbandry, enabling graduates to perform duties under the supervision of Licensed Veterinarians and Certified Veterinary Technicians. The program is now being offered at the North Black Canyon Highway campus and was modeled to meet guidelines from The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Students can pursue the associate’s degree through day classes over a course of 22 months or night classes over a 24 month period. Students will also gain applicable on-the-job training through two required clinical externships with area employers. Long Technical College has two locations in the Phoenix area, 13450 North Black Canyon Highway, and 111 W. Monroe (East Valley campus). The school originated as a result of combining two separate schools, Scottsdale Educational Center and the Institute of Medical and Dental Technology and was formerly known as Long Medical Institute.

Long Technical College, Phoenix campus is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and College of Technology (ACCSCT), and the East Valley campus is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).
